This unit aims to provide an introduction to using a computer and music software to write music.

The purpose of this unit is to provide you with knowledge of recording studio equipment and how it works.

Understanding sound
Provides an overview of the basic characteristics and principles of sound, human hearing, sound equipment and recording.
Understand and develop microphone techniques
This will enable you to identify different types of microphones, their main features and how to use them to record a variety of sound sources.
Develop mixing and mastering skills
Shows you how to be able to set up a basic mixing system.
Use audio editing tools to create a piece of music
Teaches audio editing and arranging skills.
Understand and develop DJ skills
Provides you with skills to plan and prepare a DJ set using the appropriate equipment and techniques.
Develop and use music performance skills
Helps develop performance skills, while working with others to produce and perform work.
Assist with live sound
Introduce you to the techniques and equipment used to produce live sound and different types of live sound venues.
Use synthesizers and midi instruments
Introduce you to the basic functions and techniques used to operate both synthesizers and MIDI instruments.
Develop and use audio effects
Helps develop your ability to use different types of effects processes.
Plan and produce a recording
Use equipment to produce a final recording which you will evaluate.
This course gives practical advice in the setting up and use of a PA system. Topics include getting a good drum sound,
setting up stage monitors and live sound mixing techniques.
Evening class. 1 night per week for 4 weeks from 6.00 to 9.00pm + a live gig (total 15 hours)

This course covers the use of a mixing desk; drum machine, microphones and basic effects.

New entry-level course to cover the basic skills required to be a DJ. The training includes beat matching and other
turntable and mixer skills and equipment set-up.

This qualification (NVQ 2 equivalent) is designed to meet the demand for increased skills in sound recording,
MIDI and audio sequencing and for related issues of music business. Candidates are given the opportunity to prepare for
employment by producing a CV and career development plan and are encouraged to use information technology during project work.

Learn the basics of song writing and look at how a pop/rock song is put together. This workshop shows how easy it can be
to create your own composition and keep a song interesting. Chord structure, progressions and basic music theory will
also be covered. Bring along your own lyrics or favourite poem. You do not need to be able to read music but it helps
to be able to play an instrument. 1 day workshop (Saturday) 10am to 4pm.
